Child's Bedroom

HONOLULU, HAWAII

A child's bedroom should feel energizing and fun, yet calm and organized. Artwork and opportunities for play will keep little ones inspired and occupied. This design uses pops of cheerful color, functional yet creative storage, and multi-functional furniture that can remain useful as the child grows up.

Timless White

I love white bedding. It’s extremely versatile and adds a crisp, clean look to any room.

If you choose white bedding, choose one with texture or a subtle pattern to add interest. Using a duvet & duvet cover can make it easier to swap styles in the future.

Add splashes of color with stuffed animals, throw blankets & pillows. Use fun sheets. Sheets are great way to tailor a room to a child’s interests and can easily be changed out as needed.

Artwork

If you don’t already know, I love art! It’s a great way to add personality & color. It can also be inspiring and educational.

When choosing framed art, pick standard sizes so it’s easy to swap out. The map pictured is actually a play mat. When it was outgrown, it made the perfect addition to this room.

Think ahead when you’re registering for your baby shower. Use sites like Babylist, where you can add anything to your registry from anywhere that has a website. Think local boutiques, art galleries or sites like Etsy. This will help you create a unique & authentic room.

Furniture

Choose furniture that’s multifunctional and will grow with your child.

Pick solid wood furniture in neutral wood tones or colors like, black, navy, white, or grey. These colors can feel playful and fun when paired with little kids accessories or more mature as your child ages.

Choose multifunctional furniture pieces like trundle beds or bunk beds. Pick a dresser that has a detachable changing station or that can safely accomodate one.

Storage

Consider the room size and storage needs.

Small room? No problem. Get creative with wall shelving. Add picture ledge shelves behind the door for books. Utilize narrow wall spaces for extra storage by adding a hanging bookshelf, like the Ikea one pictured.

Removing closet doors can instantly make a small room feel bigger. Place dressers in closets, add wooden hangers & cute organization bins to give the closet a cohesive, organized feel. Add a fun paint color or wall paper inside of the closet for extra flare. Darker tones will help the walls receed giving the illusion of more space.

Get Playful

Have fun! Bring it all together with a fun rug or accent wall.

As always, pick patterns for rugs or accent walls that will grow with your child, at least for a while. This accent wall looks great with a crib, a toddlers tool bench, or a cute little desk.

Be mindful of the of the rug you choose. Rugs that are more plush and have higher piles, can harbor more dust, allergens, molds, etc. If you live in a more humid climate, where the windows are regularly open, this is especially important to consider.
